Final Question

He asked, "What are you thinking?"

"Nothing", she replied as usual shaking her head. Her beautiful large eyes looked at him but she appeared lost elsewhere. He held her palm in his, caressed it for a while and looked at her again gathering his strength to speak but his words got stuck somewhere deep in his throat. He gulped air and fought hard to speak

"I am sorry." He blurted as he exhaled the air.

"Am really sorry, Naina." He said aloud again in an apologetic voice.

"Since long I wanted to say this but just didn't have the courage to say it." He looked at her for her reaction but her eyes though stuck on his face seemed distant.

"Hunn....", she replied suddenly waking up from her reverie. Her eyes fluttered.

"Are you, Ok." He asked as he squeezed her hand gently.

"Yaa,...It's ok, no need to be sorry", she replied without any expression. He felt light as he heard those words though they were mere words. A heavy load was off his chest instantly. He looked at her and again  tried to gather his strength to ask his final question. A question that had troubled him ever since he had heard her first say. And each time she had repeated it to him with a teasing smile, it had stabbed his heart.

"Naina, I am sorry. I know, this is not the right time to ask but if you won't answer this question it will keep haunting me until death." He said.

"Ya, say", she replied in a concerned voice.

"Please......please tell me why you used to say that you wanted me to die first." He looked at her for an answer as if his life depended on that answer.

"Is that the reason why you had left....?" She asked him instead, looking straight into his eyes for the first time in the last fifteen minutes. He avoided her questioning eyes but the question which had tormented him long convulsed inside.

"Naina, please. There isn't much time left and I want you to answer before....." He pleaded.

"Till now I couldn't find a convincing answer to that question. Every girl says that she would like to die first and wishes her guy to live longer than her but why you always said that you wanted me to die first. Didn't you ever love me?" She looked at him with sympathy and smiled faintly. Each passing moment tortured his soul as he felt that the answer was drifting away from him.

After a pause she replied. "That's coz i didn't want you to feel the pain of dying a lonely death. I wanted to die later only to hold you in my arms when you would breathe your last. So, that you wouldn't feel alone, loveless and......"

Even before she had completed her sentence suddenly her breath became fast. Her face contorted in pain and the machine attached to her heart began to beep loud.
He stood up in an alarm and kept looking at her as the once calm eyes began to glisten with tears and she struggled to breathe....
An attendant rushed to the room and shouted for the nurse. A couple of nurses with a doctor immediately barged into the room. They asked him to leave as they hovered around her in panic.
He stood outside the room looking inside through the glass. He felt angry at his great loss. He punched the wall in anger and frustration as he had failed to understand what he had been seeking all his life.

fantastic story. Sometimes, we dont realize what we have until we are losing it, and while we have it, we try to find reasons to doubt it, as in the case of this guy and when he realized, it was too late. Sigh.

Extremely sensitive portrayal of a relationship,in this case a husband & wife.A relationship, existing as one soul & two different physical forms,Wife & a Husband...

I am amazed by this new interpretation of love. Till now, it was generally held that someone wishes to die early before their partner to spare the bereavement of death. But to wish for your partner to dies early so that he/she doesn't have to die of loneliness and grief is something I had never given a thought to.

Very well written post!

Nice Thought.. never had thought of it in such an angle..

But what bewilders me is, the portrayal of the guy..

"Is that the reason why you had left....?" asks the girl.. So he should be his ex-bf or ex-hubby.. And if so he must be a BIG A$$#@!e to ask such a question to a dieing gf/wife..

The story teller should make it clear?? :P

Interesting,
but alas, she had to leave first. I am still too naive at understanding things of human emotions, but yes, I understand her.

@ Compassion Unlimited,
Hmm...I guess you misread it or you saw something in it that i missed out. The guy is her ex-boyfriend. Both of them are young, in their mid-20s. It is a case of lost love where the guy had turned his back to love because he had doubted and misunderstood it. But, when he realizes it, its already late and is snatched away from him by death.

THAT'S ME's comment explains well the central point of the story/fiction.

If you would like to qualify or add to your comment, you are welcome to do so :)

Blunder which cannot be explained.Realised it when I returned the second time, but by then no way I could take it back.

Thanks for the explanation.

@ Vivek,
Thanks! I can understand your outburst. He is her ex-boyfriend. Ya, he was a bit insensitive by asking her that question at a wrong time but if he hadn't then he would have never realized her worth and the meaning of those words.
Love is simple but human nature makes it complex and confusing. Throughout our lives we keep searching for perfect things. Here, it is love. This guy was in search of love but fails to understand love. At times we are so blinded by our search for answers to life that we forget to live and lose all our sensations/sensitivity for life.

I am not defending him by saying all this but simply trying to show/accept the flaw in human nature and tragedy of life.

Sh@s said...

@ BA,
Thanks!
Time and life will teach you about human emotions. Nice lines. Love is not only about giving but receiving, too.

Sh@s said...

@ Tomz,
Thanks! I do believe that such a kind of love exists. The number might be less but they do. We have led ourselves into believing by our consumerist and individualistic society that such a love is a thing of the past. We only need to change our perception. The love that we discover may not be an ideal or perfect one but both the persons together can turn it into a perfect one.

@ Deepika Vasudev,

@ மங்கை,
Thanks! I really don't know whether it is easy for a woman to live her life after her spouse's death as compared to a man.

Its true when you say that, "in todays day and age life has become so impatient, unloving, uncaring.."
Maybe this is the reason that is why many are saying here that such a love is impossible to discover in today's times.

True most realizations come in the end when there is nothing left to turn back to. Her ideology of watching him die before her is marking the strength within her and the love that she believes in. Still thinking, beautiful read!
